Today's Ride
Today was a short, easy day.
60 miles from the KaNeeTa Resort to Prineville,Oregon. Tomorrow we ride to the next hotel east of
Prineville, in John Day, Oregon, 117 miles from here! We had one four mile long climb away from the
Deschutes River early in the trip. I
guess after yesterday, the 1,000 feet of climbing in that distance seemed like
easy. We had a sag stop set up at a real
vestige of old rural America…the vans were next to the Mud Springs Grange hall
just north of Madras, Oregon. From
Madras to Prineville, U.S. 26 is a two lane road with a rather narrow
shoulder. The truckers, except for one,
move over to give room as they past cyclists.
When we got to Prineville, everyone (including me) told about the green
single trailer truck where the driver got as close as he could to the cyclists while
blowing by. I’m sure he was one of those
people who resents bicycles using “his” road.
We are all getting close to knowing everyone’s names in the
group. It seems that most
of the people are in their upper 50’s or 60’s. There is one rider in his 70’s. A father from Rockville, Maryland is riding
with his son who will be a junior in high school this year. There’s also a man from California riding
with his 24-year old daughter who two weeks after our trip ends will begin her
first teaching job at a middle school in Montana.
There is one young man from Germany, a husband and wife plus another man from Australia, and one person each from Canada and England. There’s also a couple from Kentucky who are doing this on a tandem! They are really good. It takes a bit to get uphill on the tandem, but wow do they fly down!

Go for it Bruce- Judy & I look forward to updates
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking in on me. Say hi to Judy.
DeleteGreat pics and commentary! I look forward to your summaries daily. Good to see you keeping up with the laundry, too! Be safe and enjoy! Deb
ReplyDeleteI hear you showed up at my favorite bike shop in WLB the other day. Next time you visit your sister bring your bike...we'll go for a ride.
DeleteWhen you are down to your last pair of clean bike shorts there is really no choice but to keep up with the laundry! Remember when we were kids on Virginia Terrace and a big bike ride was going for a ride around the block?
ReplyDeleteBG, this is the Chief. Have you seen Hymie? He must be lost on Hwy 26 somewhere between Prineville and Johns Day. Is it hot out there? But colder than the Hotter than Hell ride. Sorry I missed your phone call. It must have been when you first took off and we 10 lbs heavier. Heck, I wouldn't want to go 117 miles even in my car!! You are living proof that the 70 year old can still make it! The old man's still got it. At least down hill! Dave
ReplyDeleteThe last post was by me, Dave Chien. I'm a little slow on the uptake with figuring out how to use my name for the comment. I'm sure BG has been on top of this just like he's been on his bike seat.
ReplyDeleteDave, you think I couldn't figure out who that post was from? You and I are probably the only people in America who remember who Max, Hymie, Chief and 99 are! I don't know if I've lost 10 lbs yet, but today's 117 miles and 5,000 feet of climbing sure contributed. I may not prove the a 70 year old can still make it, but there is one guy on the trip who is 71! I hope I'm half as good as him when I reach that age.
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking in on me. Hope you get inspired by this and when I return we can take a bike ride. Would you believe a car ride? How about having lunch in Chinatown?
